So, I found out that there is an awesome fabric store 15 minutes from my house! I have lived here for 8 months now and had NO idea it was there! It's called G-Street Fabrics and there was one somewhat close to where we lived before and I had no idea there was one even closer to our new place. I wanted to go check out the Bernina sewing machines and G-Street was what came up for the closest dealer. I have been thinking about getting a new machine but I can't quite decide if I want to bite the bullet and go get an awesome Bernina, or just be happy with a less expensive brand (like the Brother I have). I'm pretty cheap, so I don't think I'm going to be convinced on the Bernina...even though I only hear amazing reviews about them! What sewing machine do you have? Do you like it?
Anyway, I walked in to G-Street Fabrics and felt like I was on Project Runway walking into Mood. Oh, and did you notice one of the girl's on that show has the last name of Lynett? I like her. So, maybe my new store isn't quite as cool as Mood, but it ain't no Joanns. The fabric is rolled on long tubes instead of bolts and is categorized to make me feel like maybe i could be a designer or something. Then there is a whole room for notions. AAAhhhhhh...notions! I was sooo excited to find this awesome stretchy elastic stuff. Perfect for making baby headbands.
And perfect for all these pretty flowers I have.
And they had so much variety and colors...I was in heaven. I bought some...well, maybe a little more than some. And I bought a yard of super cute fabric.
Oh, and a few patterns for $1/each.
I'm so glad I found you G-Street!

I'm jealous, all we have here is a Hancocks, and it's really lame. I have to order most of my fabric online. On a side note, I have a bernina and I love love lovity love it! I didn't have to buy it, my mother in law bought a new one and gave me her old one. I know they are expensive but they are really amazing machines!
What city is this store in? I have only found a JoAnns here (we just moved to GA) so far...and some of the WalMarts still have some fab.

Lynette, you do so much sewing it would totally be worth it for you to get a good machine like a Bernina that will last you forever. You're just going to keep burning through the cheaper ones quickly. Add up cost of repairs and how many you will need to buy over your lifetime and I bet it's pretty close to cost of a good one now! :)
I'm not going to be much help. I have 2 Bernina sewing machines, a Bernina serger, a Husqvarna serger. For my youngest two kids I have a Janome sewing machine.
A Bernina sewing and Serger are both over 20 years old. The cost maybe more, but you should never need another machine. Funny from the lady who has 2 right? I sew, along with my mom, 2 daughters, 1 son and several ladies who come over and share with us. We donate items and make for a local performance group my oldest is a member of.
I would go with a Bernina or Husqvarna. Just my 2 cents.
As for sad ladies, our Hancock closed 2 years ago and our Jo*anns roof just caved in under the weight of snow. Rumor is they are not rebuilding and will leave. This will leave us with only a Bernina store so sells cotton for over $10.00 a yard and a small Wal-Mart. I will have to drive over 2 hours to get fabric. I just am afraid to order on-line, I like to feel it before I buy.

As for sewing machines - Husqvarna Viking has pretty crummy customer service lately. My mom has been through all sorts of trouble with them lately. I personally have a top-of-the-line Brother and LOVE it. I don't have anything bad to say about the company. I looked at Berninas too, and just found I could get more for my money with the Brother. Good luck with your hunt!
As one who threw a lot of money at a lot of different machines before settling into a Bernina, I can't recommend Bernina machines enough. On top of getting a first rate machine, you'll probably also receive excellent dealer support and classes to boot. Good luck!
Oh, that sounds like such a happy, happy place! I would go NUTS with the trims!!!!
That's so funny, I started sewing up a ruffle apron like the one in the pattern last night. :) It's pretty close to identical to the one you have. So neat.
